Care Plan for the Elderly – Balearic Islands

The Foundation’s objective and purpose, to promote elderly social welfare, understood as the total set of factors involved in the quality of life of the person that make that their existence has all those elements that lead to tranquility and human satisfaction.

The Foundation seeks to promote those specific situations that enhance personal autonomy and care for people suffering from any type of dependence and also for their family environment through publications, congress attending, protecting and claiming respect for that segment of the population and giving support to other organizations focused on improving the social wellbeing of the elderly population of the Islands.

The aim of the Day Care Center is to improve the quality of life of people with dependency and so those of their families, through a targeted intervention on one side to provide comprehensive care and on the other to provide the necessary support to the family to enable the dependent person to remain in their usual environment.

The Day Care Centers should be based on the knowledge of all the principles of care, which may draw the professional criteria for intervention.

Principle of ethics. Every human being given their inner human condition, regardless of their individual situation, has the maximum value in itself. Dependent people are entitled to respect and dignity no matter the extent of dependence they endure.

Principle of competence and autonomy. Each person has abilities, irrespective of the support needed to develop competent performances, so they must have control over their own life and act freely, therefore, the care day centers must be active agents in the processes of intervention and for this is important that autonomous behaviors are promoted and that the Center’s programs are conducted from the diversity of individual needs.

Principle of participation. The person as an individual is entitled to be present when and where there are decisions to be taken that will affect their life development. The centers should promote participation of the dependent person, their family and other professionals, in the routine of the Center.

Professional intervention must be effected in the empowerment of individuals and groups, promoting participatory politics, creating and building systems or channels that enable and ensure the participation of each of the persons targeted by respective support plans both in the design phase and in the acceptance.

Principle of Comprehensiveness. The person is a multidimensional being where interact biological, psychological and social matters. The Center should be conceived from a global focus of intervention contemplating both the needs of the people using their service and those of their environment as the dependent people operate in a physical and psychosocial environment. All the above require an interdisciplinary approach and specialized intervention. There is also needed coordination action among the various community resources to ensure continuity of care.

Principle of individuality. Each person is unique and different so that intervention at the Center will take place from the view of flexibility and personalized attention, tailoring interventions to the specific needs of the people served.

Principle of independence and wellbeing. All people, regardless of their individual characteristics or status, are entitled to receive support to improve their situation of dependence and subjective well-being, so that intervention in the Center is characterized by its intended therapeutic purpose.

The Day Care Center should serve as a response to help families who want to keep taking care of their elderly in a familiar environment and that cannot combine this care with other family and work obligations.
The day center provides care to older people independent and/or affected by different degrees of dependence, being a resource social-therapeutic for older people, providing a suitable environment adapted to their needs, improving the quality of life of the individual and that of their family environment.
